The First Showboat

This is a song from the «Night After Night» album by Jerry Jeff
Walker. It’s one that really caught my ear. The link below is a
rather butchered video of me playing the first part, so you can hear
what should be the melody.

Ya know a mile ’round the bend on the O-hi-o
6 6 6 5 6 6 6 6 6 5 6 6

Com-in’ up the riv-er for the Sun-day show
-6 -6 -6 -6 -6 6 -5 -5 5 -5 6

There’s a tub-a and a ban-jo
6 6 5 6 6 5 6 6

and a steam ca-li-o-pe
6 6 5 6 6 5 6

Way in the back is a big pad-dle-wheel
-6 -6 -6 -6 6 -5 5 -5 6 -6

Chorus:
What a thrill it must have been
7 7 8 8 8 8 8

Play-in Dix-ie with the folks
8 8 -8 7 7 -6 7

Up and down the river on the first show boat
-8 -8 -8 -8 8 -8 7 7 -6 7 7
Repeat chorus

Mom-ma took the kids, Pop-pa took the lunch,
5 6 6 5 6 5 6 6 5 6

The gents took the Belles,
6 -6 -6 -6 -6

And the whis-key took the drunks.
6 -5 5 5 -5 6 -6

But the big-gest thrill of all,
6 6 5 6 6 5 6

Ya know it had to be,
6 5 6 6 5 6

Was sitt-in in the back
6 -6 -6 -6 -6 -6

Play-in steam ca-li-o-pe
6 -5 5 5 -5 6 -6

Play chorus twice, then Dixie

O I wish I wa-as in the Land of Cot-ton
6 5 4 4 4 -4 5 -5 6 6 6 5

Way down South we’re not for-got-ten
-6 -6 -6 -6 6 -6 6 -6 6

Look a-way, look a-way, look a-way Dix-ie-land
-6 -7 7 6 5 6 5 4 5 -4 5 4

Well there’s mag-ic in the air,
6 6 5 6 6 5 6

The rid-dles and the rhymes,
6 5 6 6 5 6

(Slow down for this line)
It’s slow and eas-y in the sum-mer-time
6 -6 -6 -6 6 -5 5 5 -5 6

Yeah, but who’d have e-ver thought,
6 6 5 6 6 5 6

The day would come to be,
6 5 6 6 5 6

There’s oil on the wat-er
6 -6 -6 -6 -6 6

where the riv-er used to be.
-5 5 5 5 -5 6 -6

Chorus twice, followed by Dixie

Yeah, a mile down the bend on the O-hi-o
6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 5 6 6

Com-in’ up the riv-er for the Sun-day show
-6 -6 -6 -6 -6 6 -5 5 -5 6 -6

Chorus several times, followed by Dixie.

A Little History:
Northern Illinois University Professor Emeritus (and world renowned
expert on Christmas carols) William Studwell has chosen the
450-year-old song as his Carol of the Year for 2006. He purposefully
refers to it by its original title “The First Nowell,” and is using
the occasion of the honor to set the record straight on the song’s
history.“Whenever the misguided and mistaken form “The First Noel”
appears in the literature of carols, the usual and typical impression
derived is that the carol is of French origin,” says Studwell, who has
been selecting a Carol of the Year for 21 years. “But such an
inference is thoroughly and unequivocally incorrect.”
The word “Nowell” is indeed an Anglicized version of the French word
for Christmas, “Noel,” he says. However, all historical evidence
indicates that the song emerged from the remote Cornwall region of
southwest England in the mid 16th century. Whether the name was
changed by a Francophile publisher or just a lazy typesetter seeking a
shorter word is unclear, but sometime between 1870 and the early 20th
century, the switch was made. Regardless of how or why it happened,
the new title stuck and confusion over the birthplace of this much
beloved carol has reigned ever since….

on the earth to dwell

The shepherds and the wise men

Were guided by its lights

To where the baby Jesus

On that first Christmas night

The Fields of Athenry

A LAMENT

3 3 3 3 4 -4 5
By a lonely prison wall
5 -5 -5 -5 6 5 -5 5 4 -4
I heard a young girl ca-a-a-a-all
6 6 6 5 -5 6 -5 5 -4
Michael, they have taken you away
5 -5 6 6 6 5 -5
For you stole Trevelyns corn
6 -5 5 4 4 5 -4
So our young might see the morn
3 3 -4 -4 5 -5 5 -4 4 -3 4
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay

CHORUS
6 -6 6 4 3 4 -4 5
Low lie the fields of Athenry
-4 4 3 4 -4 5 -5 6 -4
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
5 -5 6 6 6 5 -5
Our love was on the wing
6 -5 5 4 4 5 -4
We had dreams and songs to sing
3 3 -4 -4 5 -5 5 -4 4 -3 4
Its so lonely round the fields of Athenry

By lonely prison wall
I heard a young man ca-a-a-a-all
Nothing matters Mary when your free
Against the famine and the Crown
I rebelled they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity

CHORUS

By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star fa-a -a -a-all
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived to hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
Its so lonely round the fields of Athenry

CHORUS TO END
