The Rocks of Bawn

Come all ye loy-al he-roes wher-ev-er you may be
6 -7 6 -6 6 5 6 5 -4 6 6 6 6

Don’t hire with any ma-a-st-er till you know what your wo-o-rk may be
-7 -8 8 8 -8 8 -8 -7 6 -6 -7 7 7 -8 -7 -6 6 6 5

For you must rise up ea-rl-y from the clear daylight till the dawn
-8 8 8 -8 8 -8 -7 6 -6 -7 7 -8 -7-6 6 6 5 -4

For else you wont be a- b l e to plough the rocks of Bawn
-8 -8 -8 -7 6 6 -6 6 5 6 5 -4 6 6 6 6

Lyrics (lots of variations):
Come all ye loyal heroes and listen on to me.
Don’t hire with any farmer till you know what your work will be
You will rise up early in the morning from the clear day light till the dawn
and you never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn.

My curse upon you, Sweeney boy, you have me nearly robbed
You’re sitting by the fireside now, your feet upon the hob
You’re sitting by the fireside now, from clear daylight till dawn
And you never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn

My shoes they are worn and my stockings they are thin
My heart is always trembling now for fear they might give in
My heart is always trembling now from clear daylight till the dawn
And I never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn.

I wish the Sergeant-Major would send for me in time
And place me in some regiment all in my youth and prime
I’d fight for Ireland’s glory now, from the clear daylight till dawn
Before I would return again to plough the Rocks of Bawn.

Oh, we start-ed out from Ro-to

When the sheds had all cut out

We’d whips and whips of rhi-no
-5 -4 -3 -3 -3 -4 -3

With a three-spot check be-tween us

The road to Gun-da-gai

The Road To Gundagai

Brightly!

There’s a track win-ding back,
-8 -7 7 7 -6 6
To an old fash-ioned shack,
-6 -7 7 8 -8 -9 8 7
A-long the road to Gun-da-gai.
-8 8 -9 -9 8 -9 9
Where the blue gums are grow-ing
-9 -9 8 -8 8 -8 8 -9
And that Mur-um-bid-gee’s flow-ing,
8 -8 8 -7 -6 -8
Be-neath the sun-ny sky,
8 -9 9 9 -9 9 -10 8 9 -9 8 -9
Where my Dad-dy and Moth-er are wait-ing for me
7 -8 8 8 -8 8 -9
And the pals of my child-hood,
7 8 -8 7 -8
Once more will I see,
9 -9 8 8 7 -8
Then no more will I roam,

When I’m head-ing right for home,

The River (Part 1)

VERSE 1

4 5 6 6 5 6 5 6 5
You know a dream is like a riv-er
5 6 -6 -6 -6 6 6
Ev-er chang-in’ as it flows
5 6 -6 -6 -6 6 6 5
And a dream-er’s just a ves-sel
5 5 -5 5 -4 4 -4
That must fol-low where it goes
4 5 6 6 5 6 5 6 5
Try-ing to learn from what’s be-hind you
5 -5 6 -6 -6 -6 5 5
And nev-er know-ing what’s in store
5 6 6 5 6 5 6 5
Makes each day a cons-tant bat-tle
4 -4 5 5 -4 -4 4
Just to stay be-tween the shores

CHORUS

4 5 6 6 -6 6 5
And I will sail my ves-sel
5 6 -6 -6 -6 6
‘Til the riv-er runs dry
5 6 -6 -6 -6 6 6
Like a bird up-on the wind
5 -5 5 -5 6 -6
These wa-ters are my sky
6 5 6 6 6 -6 -6 6 5
I’ll nev-er reach my dest-in-a-tion
-5 -5 -6 -6 7
If I nev-er try
4 5 6 6 -6 6 5
So I will sail my ves-sel
4 -4 5 5 -4 4
‘Til the riv-er runs dry

VERSE 2

4 5 6 6 6 -6 -6 6
Too man-y times we stand a-side
5 6 6 -6 -6 -6 6 6
And let the wat-ers slip a-way
5 5 6 6 6 -6 -6 6 5
‘Til what we put off ’til to-mor-row
5 5 -5 5 -4 4 -4
It has now be-come to-day
4 5 6 6 6 -6 -6 6 5
So don’t you sit up-on the shore-line
5 7 -6 6 -5 6
And say you’re sat-is-fied
6 6 -6 -6 6 5
Choose to chance the ra-pids
4 5 5 -4 -4 4
And dare to dance that tide

REPEAT CHORUS
6 6 6 6 6 6 5
There’s bound to be rough wat-ers
5 -5 -6 -6 -6 6 6
And I know I’ll take some falls
4 -4 5 -4 4 4 4 3
With the good Lord as my cap-tain
4 -4 5 -4 4 4 6
I can make it through them all

CHORUS

4 5 6 6 -6 6 5
Yes I will sail my ves-sel
5 6 -6 -6 -6 6
‘Til the riv-er runs dry
5 6 -6 -6 -6 6 6
Like a bird up-on the wind
5 -5 5 -5 6 -6
These wa-ters are my sky
6 5 6 6 6 -6 -6 6 5
I’ll nev-er reach my dest-in-a-tion
-5 -5 -6 -6 7
If I nev-er try
4 5 6 6 -6 6 5
So I will sail my ves-sel
4 -4 5 5 -4 4
‘Til the riv-er runs dry
4 5 6 6 -6 6 5
Yes I will sail my ves-sel
4 -4 5 5 -4 4
‘Til the riv-er runs dry
4 -4 5 5 -4 4
‘Til the riv-er runs dry

The river (intro)

The River (Intro in G)

You must have a good rhythm for this song.

Here we go:
Slide from -1 to -6 then bend and go back to -6, after that,you play -7 7 8 -8 -7
and immediatly slide from -1 to -6 and hold
then slide from 6 to 8 and then you play -8 7 -8
and slide again from -1 to -6

In tabs: (__= slide)

-6b -6 = fast play

(-1__-6) -6b -6 -7 7 8 -8 -7 (-1__-6)

(6__8) -8 7 -8 (-1__-6)

The River (Harp Solos)

Intro:

(slide from -5)-6 -6b -7 7(sus)
8 -8 7 (slide again from -5)-6b(sus)
8 -8 7 -8 (slide from -5)-6(sus)

Harp Solo (1:57):

(slide from -5)-6 -6b(sus) -7 7(sus) 8 -8 7 (slide from
-5)-6(sus)
8 9 9 9 -10 9 -9 9
-10 9 -9 9 7 -8 8 -8 7 slide from -5)-6(sus)
8 -8 -8 -8 7 -8 7 (slide from -5)-6
6 6 7 -7 (slide from -5)-6(sus)

The River (harp parts, simplified)

The River contains possibly the best harmonica solo in any Rock song.
I’ve listened to the song from the album very carefully and I’ve
purged many short tones and small bends Bruce makes to make his
awesome solo more beginner friendly. So keep in mind that this is not
an exact tab, it’s a bit simplified, but it sounds just as great as
the original. The only bend that was impossible to avoid is on the 6
draw, but don’t be intimidated by it, experiment with your tongue
position, it doesn’t have to sound clean. I’ve marked with «L» notes
that you should hold longer and possibly add them little vibrato
effect.
