Verse 1:
4 -4 5-4 4
As the snow flies,
4 4 5 6 6 6 -6 6 6 6
on a cold and grey Chicago mornin’,
6 6 -5 -5 -5-5 -4 -4 5 -4 4 4 5
a poor little baby child is born in the ghetto.
-8 7 7 78 R 4 -4
(in the | ghetto.)
4 -4 5 -4 4
And his mama cries,
4 4 5 6 6 6 -6 6 6
’cause if there’s one thing that she don’t need,
6 6 6 -5 -5-5-5 5 -4 -4 5
it’s an-other hungry mouth to feed,
-4 4 4 5 -8 7 7 78
in the ghetto. (in the ghetto.)
5 5 6 5 6 6 6
People, don’t you understand
6 6 6 6 -6 6 5 4
the child needs a helping hand,
-6 -6 -6 -6 -6 -6 -6 6 6 -5 5
he’ll grow to be an angry young man some day.
5 5 6 5 6 6 6
Take a look at you and me;
6 -6 7 -8 7 7 -6 6
are we too blind to see?
-6 -6 -6 -6 6 6 6
Do we simply turn our heads
6 -5 -5 5 4 -4
and look the other way?
4 -4 5 -4 4
Well, the world turns,
4 4 5 6 6 6 6 6 6 -6 6 6
and a hungry little boy with a runny nose
6 -5 -5 -5 -5 5 -4 -4 5
plays in the street as the cold wind blows
-4 4 4 5 -8 7 7 78
in the ghetto,(in the ghetto)
4 -4 5 -4 4
And his hunger burns.
4 4 5 6 6 6 -6 6 6
So he starts to roam the streets at night,
6 6 6 -5 -5 -5
and he learns how to steal
-5 -5 5 -4 -4 5
and he learns how to fight
-4 4 4 5 -8 7 7 78
in the ghetto.(in the ghetto)
Verse 2:
6 6 6 6 6 6 -6 6
Then one night in desperation,
6 -6 -6 -6 6 5
the young man breaks a-way;
6 -6 -6 -6
he buys a gun,
-6 6 6 6
he steals a car,
-5 -5 -5 -5 5 -4 -4 5
tries to run but he don’t get far,
5 -5 5-4 4
and his mama cries.
4 4 5 6 6 6 6 -6 6 6 6
As a crowd gathers ’round an angry young man
6 6 -5 -5 -5
face down in the street
-5 5 5 -4 -4 5
with a gun in his hand
5 -4 4 5 -8 7 7 78
in the ghetto,(in the ghetto)
4 4 -4 5 -4 4 -8 7 7 78
And as her young man dies. (in the ghetto)
4 4 5 6 6 6 -6 6 6 6
On a cold and grey Chicago mornin’,
6 6 -5 -5 -5 -5-5 5 -4 5
an-other little baby child is born

I am tabbing this song so that it may be played with no bending or
overblowing. This means that it requires the use of multiple
harmonicas. I’ll leave it up to you whether you want to use another
harmonica or bend the note (see my other tab »In the Flesh intro
(diatonic)»). I will arrange the tab by harp key, so some phrases
may be cut between lines while others may be combined on a line. My
other tab has the notes arranged by phrase.
Harps needed: A, G, F, C

I’ve been playing this with great success on my tremolo sextet, which
is why I use the G:-4 in line 6, for ease of rotation. If you can
fingure out a way to bind a bunch of harmonicas together, definitely
do it. It’s a fun and unusual way to play this song. For all of you
chromatic desciples out there, I posted the song for chromatic as
well. Thanks for reading and enjoy!
This song requires a 1/2 step overblow or a 1 1/2 step bend. If that
is beyond your skill, try the song using a chromatic or multiple
diatonics. I have included the accompanying chords. Each chord is
held for the length of the line.
‘= 1/2 step bend
»= 1 (full) step bend
»’= 1 1/2 step bend

Trad. Christmas Carol
Key: F
-3 -3* 4 -3 3 -2 3 1 1
In the field with their flocks a-bid-ing,
-2 3 -3 -3 -3 -3* 3 4
They lay on the dew-y ground;
-3-3* 4 -33 -2 3 3 1-1 1
And glim-m’ring un-der the star-light,
2-3 -3 -3* 3 3 -2
The sheep lay white a-round;
3 3 -3 4 4 -4 -3 3-2 2
When the light of the Lord streamed o’er them,
1 2 2 2 -2 -1 -1 3
And lo! From the heav-en a-bove,
3 -3 4 -4 -3 -3 3-3 2
An an-gel leaned from the glo-ry,
1 2 2 -2 -1 3
And sang his song of love.
1 -2 -2 3 3 -3 -3* 4
He sang, that first sweet Christ-mas,
4 -3* -3* -3* -3 -3 3
The song that shall nev-er cease.
Refrain
-2 -2 -2 3 3 3 -3-3* 4
“Glo-ry to God in the high-est,
-3* -3 -3* 3 3 -2
On earth good will and peace.”
“To you in the city of David
A Savior is born today!”
And sudden a host of the heavenly ones
Flashed forth to join the lay.
O never hath sweeter message
Thrilled home to the souls of men
And the heavens themselves had never heard
A gladder choir till then.
For they sang that Christmas carol
That never on earth shall cease.
Refrain
And the shepherds came to the manger,
And gazed on the Holy Child;
And calmly o’er that rude cradle
The virgin mother smiled;
And the sky in the starlit silence,
Seemed full of the angel lay:
“To you in the City of David
A Savior is born today!”
O they sang, and we pray that never
The carol on earth shall cease.
Refrain
